New drug for skin cancer tested

A new type of DNA-based drug has been tested for the treatment of skin cancer. According to researchers, it can also be used to treat melanoma.

The first human trial of DZ13 took place at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Australia, led by Irish Dr Fergal Moloney (University College Dublin).

DZ13 works as a "molecular killer," says Dr. Moloney. The effect of the drug is aimed only at cancer cells and does not damage healthy tissue. The DNA in the drug is attached to a protein released by the cancer cell's gene. Once they bind, the drug splits the cancer cell in half. First trials showed that the drug is effective and safe for patients.
