Pemphigus vera

Pemphigus verus (lat. Pemphigus verus) is an autoimmune skin disease characterized by the appearance of blisters on the skin and mucous membranes.

The cause of the disease is a dysfunction of keratinocytes (skin epidermal cells) due to autoantibodies circulating in the blood directed against desmosomal proteins of keratinocytes. This leads to disruption of intercellular contacts in the epidermis and the formation of intraepidermal gaps and blisters.

Clinically manifested by the appearance on the skin and mucous membranes (oral cavity, eyes, genitals) of blisters filled with transparent contents. The bubbles burst, leaving erosions.

Diagnosis is based on the clinical picture, histological examination and detection of circulating antibodies.

Treatment includes systemic glucocorticosteroids, cytostatics, and immunosuppressants. The prognosis depends on the form and severity of the disease.
