Polyoma is a group of viruses that cause various infections in humans and animals. Some of these viruses cause severe diseases such as polio and Berkeley lymphoma. However, most polyomata are not pathogenic for humans and cause infections only in animals.
Polyoma is classified based on genetic similarity. It includes viruses that have very similar genetic sequences and can cause similar diseases. For example, poliovirus and poliovirus can cause illnesses that may be difficult to distinguish from each other.
Infection with the polyoma virus occurs through direct contact with an infected animal or through consumption of its products. Infection through airborne droplets is also possible. Animal susceptibility varies - some animals are more at risk of infection than others. Among animals, rabbits, rats and mice are most susceptible to polyoma. Pets can also carry polyoma infections, but the likelihood of infection is much lower than with other animals.
