Sputum Putrid

Putrid (putrid) and foul-smelling (foetid) sputums contain putrefactive microbial cells. Microbes and their metabolic products quickly cause material deterioration, which is retained and concentrated by pus and other undifferentiated masses. Based on the results of bacteriological examination, sputum can be regarded as purulent or caseous.
