Predecessor

A precursor is a substance that precedes another substance in a sequence of metabolic transformations. A precursor is a substance from which another substance is synthesized.

Precursors play an important role in the biochemical processes of the body. They are the starting materials for the synthesis of various biologically active compounds, such as hormones, enzymes, neurotransmitters and others. For example, amino acids act as precursors of proteins, carbohydrates are precursors of glycogen.

Determination of precursors is necessary to understand the mechanisms of formation of biologically important substances in the body. Knowledge of the pathways of metabolic transformations of precursors makes it possible to influence these processes and correct metabolic disorders with the help of medications or dietary changes. Thus, the study of precursors is of fundamental importance for biochemistry, physiology, medicine and other life sciences.
