Hydrocephalocele

Hydrocephalocele is a congenital malformation in which the meninges filled with cerebrospinal fluid protrude through a defect in the bones of the skull.

This condition occurs due to failure of the closure of the neural tube during the early stages of embryonic development. As a result, a defect is formed in the bones of the skull, through which the meninges filled with cerebrospinal fluid protrude. Hydrocephalocele can be localized in various parts of the head - frontal, parietal, occipital regions.

Clinical manifestations depend on the location and size of the defect. Most often, a swelling in the area of the defect, filled with fluid, and deformation of the skull are determined. In severe cases, cerebrovascular accidents and liquorrhea are possible.

Diagnosis is based on ultrasound, CT and MRI data of the brain. The treatment is surgical and consists of plastic surgery of the skull bone defect. The prognosis depends on the timeliness of surgical correction. If the defect is corrected early, the prognosis is favorable.
