Safranin

Safranin (Arabic: zafaran saffron) is an organic dye. Belongs to the class of azo dyes. It is a dark green crystal with a metallic sheen. In aqueous solutions it has a bright red color. Widely used in histology and microbiology for staining preparations. It is also used in the textile industry for dyeing silk and wool in red and pink tones.

Safranin is a basic dye and has an affinity for cellulose fibers. Resistant to light, alkalis, weak acids. In the presence of strong oxidizing agents and when heated, it is destroyed with discoloration.

The name "safranin" comes from the Arabic word "zafaran" - saffron. This is due to the bright red color of the substance, reminiscent of the color of the powder from dried saffron pestles.
