Tibialis Anterior muscle

The tibialis anterior muscle (m. tibialis anterior) is a muscle of the lower leg, located in front in the upper third of the lower leg.

The tibialis anterior muscle arises from the lateral surface of the upper third of the tibia, the interosseous membrane and the lateral collateral ligament.

Passing obliquely downward and medially, the tibialis anterior muscle attaches to the medial surface and edge of the body of the first sphenoid bone.

Innervation is provided by the deep peroneal nerve.

The main function of the muscle is to flex the foot and raise its medial edge (dorsiflexion). Also involved in maintaining the knee joint in an extended position.
