Werner-Hiss is a group of hereditary diseases characterized by various lesions of the nervous system. The most common of them are Werner syndrome in children and Hiss syndrome in adults. Also, Werner syndrome is a genetic disease that is inherited from both parents in 50% of cases. Werner syndrome was first described in 1908 by German pediatrician Hans Werner, who noticed characteristic signs in his son. A few years later, German neurologist Hermann Moses Hertz discovered similar symptoms in an adult patient. The syndrome was named after them. Currently, the exact mechanism of development of the disease is not fully understood, but research suggests that the disease may be associated with mutations in the gene encoding the synthesis of POMC proteins.

Werner syndrome usually does not appear in newborns, but rather in childhood or adolescence. Patients often have underdevelopment of the head and body, especially the face and skull, and retarded growth and development. Some may also have problems with vision or hearing. Common symptoms of Werner syndrome include tooth loss, obesity, constipation, impaired facial growth, and mild delirium. Some patients with Werner syndrome suffer from psychological problems such as depression. Diagnosis can be made based on a physical examination, blood test for hormonal levels, biochemical studies and other additional methods, depending on the symptoms.

There is virtually no cure for Werner syndrome, and it often progresses with age. The condition can only be controlled and the patient’s life can be improved through exercise, diet therapy, psychotherapy and medication.
