Preimplantation Diagnosis

Preimplantation Diagnosis is a type of prenatal diagnosis in which embryos are examined in the early stages of development (before implantation into the uterus) in order to identify genetic abnormalities. This avoids the transfer of embryos with identified pathologies into the uterine cavity and thereby prevents the development of a fetus with serious hereditary diseases.

Diagnosis is carried out as part of the in vitro fertilization procedure by biopsy of one or more cells of the embryo and subsequent genetic analysis of the resulting material. The most common indications for preimplantation diagnostics are the detection of diseases such as cystic fibrosis, Down syndrome, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, etc.
