The anterior fibular-talar ligament (lat. ligamentum fibulotalare anterius) is one of the ligaments of the ankle joint. It connects the anterior edge of the fibula to the anterior surface of the talus.
This ligament strengthens the front of the ankle joint and prevents the foot from hyperextending. It also stabilizes the talus, preventing it from moving anteriorly.
Damage to the anterior tibiotalar ligament can lead to ankle instability and chronic pain. Most often this occurs when the foot is turned in, when it is excessively extended. Treatment includes joint immobilization, physical therapy and, in some cases, surgery.
Prevention of injuries to this ligament involves strengthening the calf muscles and wearing comfortable shoes. You should also avoid sudden movements and twisting of the foot during sports and physical activity.
