In the 20th century, weightlifting developed rapidly. This was facilitated by an effective competition system, support from the International Olympic Committee, and numerous records of weightlifters. The greatest successes in the international arena were achieved by weightlifters of the USSR, including representatives of Russia and Belarus. Among them are Olympic champions - V. Shariy, L. Taranenko, A. Kurlovich.

Currently, our weightlifting team includes world-class leaders - 2010 European champion V. Derbenev, champion, as well as world and European record holder, two-time silver medalist of the 2004, 2008 Olympic Games. A. Rybakov, champion and world record holder in the snatch A. In the 1960s first in North America, and then in Europe, such strength sports as bodybuilding, powerlifting (powerlifting), and arm wrestling (arm wrestling, arm wrestling) became widespread. In the countries of the former Soviet Union, these species became popular in the early 1990s. The evolution of strength sports has reached another previously unattainable level. The first participants in the competition were weightlifters. However, thanks to the scientific research of Professor I.V. Velsky, the creative work of leading coaches - V.F. Kovalev, V.V. Rudy, V.V. Babuk and others - Slavic athletes in strength sports quickly won international recognition. The pride of our strength sport is the world champions V. Minov (powerlifting), L. Belova, E. Grinkevich (benchpress), V. Nikolsky, O. Matskevich, E. Kondratova, L. Shestakova, M. Smirnova, R. Abramov (armwrestling) ; European champions Y. Shilo, A. Kriksin, A. Shabunya.D. Sushko (bodybuilding) and many other famous athletes.

Experts have noted a large influx of freshmen into athletics sections, both boys and girls. Senior students choose athletic training as the most acceptable type of recreational activity. The task of trainers and teachers is to methodically correctly and effectively, taking into account the individual level of physical fitness of each student, to ensure the improvement of their physical qualities, theoretical knowledge, as well as to instill methodological skills for the further use of athleticism in maintaining a high level of performance.
