Before summer, we all want to get a little tan in order to look rested and wear revealing clothes with peace of mind. You probably know that solarium is harmful, that it can increase the risk of skin cancer, and also speed up skin aging. Everyone knows about this, but nevertheless, every spring girls still go to solariums at their own peril and risk. To minimize the harm, we decided to talk to a doctor and find out how to properly sunbathe in a solarium.

How to sunbathe properly in a solarium: instructions

Before giving recommendations about tanning in a solarium, I want to note that 5 minutes of such tanning stops collagen production for 72 hours. During this period, our skin fibers are not synthesized! This means that we are speeding up skin aging.

1. The skin needs to be cleaned before tanning.

If you decide to go to the solarium, you need to remember that the skin must first be thoroughly cleansed. Therefore, if you are sunbathing in a fitness club while taking a shower, use a hard washcloth and preferably a body scrub. This way you will remove a certain amount of dead horny scales, and the tan will lie more evenly.

2. Moisturize your skin BEFORE and AFTER tanning

Also, your task is to minimize the harmful effects of solarium on the skin, protecting it from moisture loss and dryness. How to sunbathe properly in a solarium? Before and after tanning, you should use any moisturizer. It’s better to mix moisturizing body milk and some nourishing, oil-rich cream.

Back, rest: in what position should you sleep so that your back does not hurt?

3. Increase the amount of vitamin C in your diet

If you sunbathe in a solarium, pay attention to the amount of vitamin C in your diet. It is a powerful antioxidant that minimizes the harmful effects of tanning lamps on the skin. There is a lot of it in fresh fruits, any green fruits, as well as leafy vegetables and herbs. You can also take ascorbic acid in tablets - about 500 mg per day. This should be done during the entire period while you are using the solarium. But using products with SPF in a solarium, in my opinion, is pointless. If you are afraid of getting sunburned, reduce the procedure time to a minimum.

4. Tanning activator is not harmful

As for tanning activators, these are products that contain substances that allow you to obtain a more even tan tone, helping to preserve and maintain it. For example, they contain beta-carotene, a substance that accumulates in subcutaneous fat and provides a beautiful tan. In addition, they contain many different oils that help preserve and maintain the lipid layer of the skin. They glue the epidermis scales together, making the skin smoother. As a result, the tan goes on more evenly and lasts longer.

5. Cover moles and nipples with stickers

Before the session, it is recommended to cover more pigmented areas of the skin (nipples, moles, birthmarks) with special stickers. Such protection is quite enough to protect these areas from the effects of solariums.

6. Monitor the duration of the session

How long should the first session be and how to properly start tanning in a solarium? It all depends on the phototype. People of phototype 3-4 can sunbathe in a solarium for 5, 8, and 10 minutes. Whereas people have 1-2 phototypes - no more than 1-2 minutes.

7. Don't go to the solarium too often

The time of the first session should be minimal. I would recommend visiting the solarium no more than 2 times a week. As soon as the skin is slightly tanned (as a rule, 4 sessions are enough for this), switch to 1 procedure per week. After tanning, be sure to apply a product with moisturizing and nourishing ingredients to your skin.

Many women and men want to have a beautiful dark skin tone throughout the year. However, not everyone can afford regular relaxation under the bright rays of the sun. In such a situation, artificial tanning comes to the rescue, which can be purchased in just a few minutes in a solarium. Today, the most popular is not the classic horizontal solarium, but the vertical one. This is due to the undoubted advantages of this type of solarium.

What is a vertical solarium

A vertical solarium is a booth with special equipment for receiving dosed irradiation with ultraviolet lamps. The main feature of such a solarium is the position of the body. So, in the earlier version of the solarium, the procedure is carried out in a horizontal position, but in a vertical solarium you need to stand and you can move. It is the vertical solarium that is currently gaining increasing popularity. It is more modern and powerful, therefore helping to achieve results faster. It is also more suitable for overweight people who are uncomfortable in a horizontal solarium, and for those who are afraid of confined spaces.

Going to the solarium is not recommended for children under 16 years of age. And in a number of European countries and some US states, it is legally prohibited for minors to visit solariums.

Today, most women and men choose a vertical solarium, as it has a number of advantages over other types:

  1. hygiene - during the procedure a person does not touch the walls of the solarium;
  2. versatility - this type of solarium is suitable for absolutely everyone, regardless of weight and height;
  3. uniform tanning - in a vertical solarium you can change positions, so the tan even applies to problem areas (inner thighs and sides);
  4. saving time - thanks to high power, the skin quickly acquires a beautiful shade;
  5. comfort - music is turned on during the procedure, so you can move or dance.

Despite all the advantages of a vertical solarium, it has several disadvantages:

  1. due to the high power, the likelihood of burns increases, so you need to accurately calculate the time you spend in the solarium;
  2. for many people, lying in a solarium is much more comfortable than standing, especially after a hard day;
  3. A session in a vertical solarium costs more than in a horizontal one.

The quality of tanning depends on the characteristics of the lamps and the condition of the equipment. A solarium is powerful if it has at least 40 lamps and they have been in use for no more than 500 hours. Often, legs do not tan well in vertical solariums. This problem does not arise if the vertical solarium has a mirror floor equipped with lower lamps.

The tanning result also depends on your skin type:

  1. Celtic. This type includes people with blue or green eyes, freckles, and fair hair and skin. They are advised not to sunbathe, but to use self-tanner. If you have a Celtic skin type and you decide to go to a solarium, then you can sunbathe for no longer than 8–10 minutes twice a week. The result of the procedures will be a light tan with a yellowish tint after 7–8 visits to the solarium.
  2. Light-skinned European. This type includes people with brown hair, fair skin, freckles, brown and blue eyes. They can sunbathe three times a week for a maximum of 10 minutes. In just two weeks, a fairly beautiful, moderate shade of tan will appear. The main thing is not to overdo it, as the second type of skin is subject to severe irritation.
  3. Dark-skinned European. This type includes people with dark blond or brown hair, dark eyes and fair skin that tolerates tanning well. It is enough for them to visit the solarium three times a week and sunbathe for up to 20 minutes. After 5-6 procedures, the tan will be quite intense, but not permanent. Therefore, to maintain the results, you need to visit the solarium 1-2 times a week.
  4. Mediterranean. This type includes people with dark skin, dark eyes and hair. They need to visit the solarium only 3-4 times for up to 20 minutes. To maintain a tan, it is enough to visit the solarium once a week.

The first session in the solarium should last 3–5 minutes. Subsequently, it is necessary to gradually increase the duration of stay in the solarium to the maximum recommended time.

There are no specific contraindications to visiting a vertical solarium. They are the same for all types of solarium. Before you sign up for the procedure, be sure to read them and consult with your doctor. So, you should avoid visiting the solarium if you have:

  1. severe general condition (heart and respiratory failure, exhaustion, etc.);
  2. acute inflammatory diseases, including those of infectious and parasitic origin;
  3. blood diseases;
  4. family history of melanoma;
  5. severe heart and vascular diseases, including grade 3 arterial hypertension and clinically significant atherosclerosis;
  6. severe hypotension;
  7. spasmophilia;
  8. damage to the central nervous system;
  9. impaired renal or liver function;
  10. malignant and benign tumors, cystic formations;
  11. taking antidepressants and hormonal drugs. Quite often they contain components that increase photosensitivity. When getting a tan, there is a high risk of getting an allergic rash, and sometimes a burn;
  12. the presence of a large number of moles, age spots and freckles;
  13. increased skin sensitivity - photosensitivity or photodermatitis;
  14. gynecological disorders;
  15. fear of closed spaces;
  16. the presence of fresh scars and scars on the skin;
  17. exacerbation of a chronic disease;
  18. tuberculosis.

If you had hair removal or chemical peeling before visiting the solarium, or if you started menstruation or had a fever, you will need to reschedule the procedure.

Preparing for a visit to the solarium

Before visiting the solarium, you need to prepare properly:

  1. read the contraindications and consult your doctor;
  2. When making an appointment at the solarium, check how long ago the lamps were replaced;
  3. 10 days before the procedure, do a gentle peeling. Thanks to this, the tan will lie more evenly;
  4. do hair removal at least two days before visiting the solarium;
  5. on the day you plan to visit the solarium, drink more water;
  6. take a shower two hours before the procedure. Do not apply deodorant or other cosmetics under any circumstances;
  7. 30 minutes before the procedure, drink a glass of carrot juice.

Rules of conduct and recommended poses

In order for your skin to acquire a beautiful shade in the solarium, you must follow the following rules:

  1. Before and after the procedure, apply special cosmetics to the skin, thanks to which ultraviolet rays will not cause irritation and will quickly give the skin a dark tint. Tanning studios help clients choose the most suitable products. They are selected depending on skin type. You can purchase them in the studio itself;
  2. Do not sunbathe with makeup under any circumstances;
  3. Before starting the procedure, remove all jewelry;
  4. cover large moles with special round stickers;
  5. to protect your hair from drying out, put a scarf or cap on your head;
  6. tape nipples with sticky tape to reduce the risk of breast cancer;
  7. remove contact lenses and put on special glasses, as ultraviolet radiation has a detrimental effect on the retina;
  8. Apply balm to your lips.

All necessary accessories, namely cosmetics, stickers, glasses, stickini and a cap, can be purchased directly at the tanning studio. Some salons provide this set for free. You should also be given a special mat to place on the floor in the booth.

In a vertical solarium you can stand, spin, and even dance. This will in no way affect the quality of the tan. But to make it uniform, it is recommended to use the following tips:

  1. While in the booth, grab the handrails with your hands. Thanks to this, the inside of your hands will tan;
  2. To tan the inner thighs, do not touch your legs.

What to do after solarium

After completing the procedure, you should drink clean water. You can take a shower only after 4–5 hours. In this case, the water should be at room temperature, never hot. It is also prohibited to take a contrast shower. It is best to simply rinse your body or use a mild gel, but not soap. After solarium, the use of a washcloth and sponge, as well as scrub and peeling, is unacceptable. When you finish taking a shower, do not rub your skin with a towel, but simply pat it lightly and apply moisturizing milk. After solarium, do not go to the pool, sauna or bathhouse under any circumstances. The next artificial tanning session should be no earlier than 48 hours later.

If you do not follow all the rules of behavior in a solarium and recommendations, then burns, redness, rashes, pimples, moles and age spots may appear on your body. All this will be accompanied by headache, fever and itching. If you followed all the recommendations, but after the procedure you noticed these unpleasant symptoms, then this may indicate that you have photodermatitis (allergy to the sun). In this case, you should immediately consult a doctor. Another side effect after visiting a solarium is the appearance of chloasma due to changes in hormonal levels. This threatens pregnant women, as well as those who have liver problems, gynecological and parasitic diseases. Also at risk are men and women who used perfume before visiting a solarium.

When will the effect become noticeable?

The time it takes to see results after the procedure depends on what skin type you have. Thus, owners of the third and fourth skin types (dark-skinned European and Mediterranean) will notice the effect after the first procedure. Girls with the second skin type (light-skinned European) will need to wait until the end of five to six procedures. Those with Celtic skin type will have to wait the longest. To get a light yellow tan, they need to visit the solarium about eight times. After this, the tan will last no more than two weeks, so it must be constantly maintained. To do this, it is enough to visit the solarium once a week.

What determines the cost of a salon procedure?

Solarium prices are calculated based on the cost of one minute of the procedure. It is influenced by several factors. So, in small salons they offer their services at minimal prices, but in popular studios the price can be several times higher. However, the low price is a reason to think, since it is possible that the lamps in this salon have not been replaced for a long time. The power of ultraviolet lamps is another factor that affects the cost of a minute in a solarium. Also in some studios the price includes free stickers, stickies, glasses and a hat with cream. Because of this, the price for the service increases. On average, one minute in a vertical solarium will cost from 10 to 25 rubles.

Is it possible to combine a vertical solarium with other procedures?

It is not recommended to combine a visit to the solarium with other cosmetic procedures. So, if you want to do a superficial peel, then wait two to three days. And deep peeling can be done only after a month. This is due to the fact that ultraviolet rays in a tanning salon damage the skin, and peeling will only worsen the situation. The same applies to laser, electrolysis and photoepilation. Firstly, this procedure is less effective on tanned skin. Secondly, the risk of burns and irritation increases. Waxing, sugaring, body wraps and anti-cellulite massage are also best postponed for a while.

Reviews of vertical solarium

Tanned skin always looks smoother and more pleasant than pale skin. It is a fact. I like myself better tanned. I have always preferred the vertical solarium. Primarily because I find it more hygienic. Of course, the horizontal solarium is wiped after each visitor, but this is usually done with disposable napkins, and personally this does not reassure me much. In a vertical one you can sunbathe without any underwear at all, but in a horizontal one I wouldn’t risk it. Another plus is that you get a tan without any gaps. And in vertical solariums there is usually music, and the process is less tiring. But now I refrain from these procedures, because it is unsafe for the skin. Ultraviolet lamps from tanning beds can cause premature skin aging and even cancer. So think about it. Of course, beauty requires sacrifice, but is it worth making SUCH sacrifices?

I sometimes use a vertical solarium. I love. I haven’t tried a horizontal solarium, but they say it’s worse. But vertical solariums are different from solariums. Once I came to a recently opened solarium, which is located next to my house. The tan turned out to be terrible with red spots, uneven, in some places the skin was burnt, in others it was not tanned. In general, if you are planning to go to a solarium, then it would be good to have it checked by someone you know, because you don’t want to be a red guinea pig. No special preparation is required to go to the solarium. But if you have long hair, then grab a comfortable hair clip or elastic band. In my opinion, sunbathing in a solarium is a very pleasant procedure, especially in winter, when there is cold and snow everywhere, going to a solarium is like a ten-minute stay in a hot country. It's also warm and sunny there. You come out of there, all so fresh and rosy. It’s enough for me to go twice a month, for about ten minutes, to have a normal, natural tan. In general, the most important rule when using a solarium is a sense of proportion, if you stick to it, then I think that nothing bad will come from it.
