Basophil mononuclear cells are the most important indicator of infection with the Epstein Barr virus, one of the most common human viruses. The infection can also cause diseases such as rheumatic fever, monocytous lymphocytoma, lymphogranulomatosis, gastric sarcoma, Kaposi's sarcoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma.
