Jaundice is a clinical syndrome that is manifested by yellow discoloration of the sclera, skin and visible mucous membranes, as well as itching of the skin. It develops due to the destruction of one or more classes of cell membranes by bilirubin, which is formed when red blood cells break down. Provocateurs of destruction are substances that violate the integrity of the membrane (toxins of any origin, deficiency of enzymes that ensure the catabolism of bile pigments, autoimmune processes in hepatitis). In almost all cases, jaundice is accompanied by symptoms of bilirubin poisoning - yellowing of the sclera and skin. If this does not happen, it means that there is not enough bilirubin remaining in the liver. Jaundice is one of the most common types of intoxication in various pathologies.
