When leprosy begins, the face begins to flush and it becomes red with a black tint, and the whites of the eyes become dark, reddish; tightness appears in breathing, and hoarseness in the voice due to damage to the lungs and pulmonary tube. The patient often sneezes, and a nasal sound occurs in the nose, which often develops into blockage and loss of smell; the hair becomes thinner and begins to thin, perspiration appears on the chest and face area; body odor, especially sweat, as well as the smell of breath becomes somewhat fetid. A person develops black-billed qualities - eccentricity and malice; he often sees dark dreams, and in his sleep it seems to him that a great burden lies on him: Then the hair begins to fall and split, especially the hair growing on and near the face; Often the hairy area is corroded, and the nails crack; the appearance becomes ugly, the face is gloomy and black, the blood congeals in the joints and rots. The constriction of breathing intensifies, and it comes to significant difficulty and severe shortness of breath; the voice becomes extremely hoarse, the lips thicken, the complexion turns black, and glandular growths appear on the body, similar to the bumps of an animal called satyrus in Greek. Then, if the leprosy is not quiet, the body begins to ulcerate, the nasal cartilage is corroded, the nose and limbs fall off and foul-smelling pus flows from the ulcers. The voice completely disappears and there is no hair left anywhere; the complexion becomes very dark.
The leper's pulse is weak due to weak strength and little need to extinguish heat, since the disease is cold, but since the coldness is not strong, it is slow and not fast. Since the pulse is neither fast nor large, it must be frequent.
