Restoration of lactation
First, let's figure out what determines the appearance of milk and its release from the mammary gland. The production of milk in our country is carried out by the hormone prolactin, the formation of which depends on the sucking activity of the child. This hormone causes breast cells to produce milk. Milk secretion depends on the action of another hormone - oxytocin. Its action is manifested in the contraction of smooth muscle cells around the lobules of the mammary gland, which leads to the squeezing out of milk.
You can increase lactation only by increasing the production of these hormones. Prolactin production is affected by proper nipple latching, frequency of attachments, and night feedings. The production of oxytocin is influenced by a woman’s emotional state.
To restore lactation you need:
- Ensure maximum physical contact with the child
- Learn how to apply correctly
- Apply baby frequently, at least every hour during the day and several times at night
- Eliminate supplements and additional fluids
- Give up pacifiers
- Give yourself and your baby 1-2 weeks to restore lactation
By following these rules, most women regain enough milk to feed their baby. Consultation with a specialist and support from loved ones is also very important.
