Cadaverine (Latin cadaver - corpse) is a biogenic amine formed during the decomposition of proteins in corpses. Belongs to the group of putrescine amines.
Cadaverine is formed by decarboxylation of lysine under the action of microbial enzymes. A high content of cadaverine is found in the tissues of corpses in the initial stages of decay.
Cadaverine is a toxic substance. At concentrations above the maximum permissible level, it can cause irritation of the mucous membranes and skin, headaches, and nausea.
Determination of cadaverine concentration is used in forensic medicine to establish the duration of death. Elevated levels of cadaverine may indicate decomposition of organic material.
