Fructose intolerance

Fructose intolerance - description of the disease

**Fructose intolerance** is a condition in which the body cannot absorb fructose, a type of sugar found in many fruits and vegetables. Usually the problem does not appear until adolescence, but for some it is discovered during pregnancy or after childbirth.

The main symptom of fructose intolerance is stomach upset, which may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhea. If symptoms are ignored, problems can lead to more serious complications, including weight loss, dehydration, muscle weakness, fatigue and sleep disturbances.

According to WHO, about 8% of people with a deficiency of the disaccharide enzyme isomaltase, which breaks down fructose into harmless monosaccharides such as glucose or galactose, are faced with the problem of this organic enzymatic destruction. Other studies indicate a population prevalence of fructase intolerance of at least 4% of cases.
