Sympathectomy (Latin sympathectomy, from Greek συμπάθεια (sympathy) + κτομή (ectomy) - removal of sympathetic nerve endings) is a surgical operation that involves destruction of the sympathetic ganglia: the cervical or thoracolumbar sections of the sympathetic trunk. It is carried out to reduce pain in trigeminal neuralgia and hyperhidrosis. Alternative names are Oberst and Grüber sympathectomies, Hoffman operations. Sympathectomy is usually performed under general anesthesia.
