Alpha cells of pancreatic islet cells are acidophilic insulinocytes and are key cells in the mechanism of blood sugar control. They produce the peptide GLP-1, which stimulates the release of insulin and has an anabolic effect on fat cells. Alpha cells also secrete amylin, a hormone that lowers blood sugar by slowing the breakdown of carbohydrates in the gastrointestinal tract, which prevents the absorption of sugar from food. In addition, GLP-2 regulates intestinal motility and stimulates the release of nutrients from the intestines. But sometimes they may exhibit abnormal behavior called hyperinsulinous acute pancreatic disease. This may be due to mutations in genes
