Scurvy is an acute infectious disease of animals and humans, mainly young pigs, caused by a lack of ascorbic acid in the diet or its failure to absorb it due to a sharp disruption of collagen synthesis due to a disorder of vitamin therapy, as well as high activity of the tissue enzyme gastrin in predisposed individuals. Scurvy most affects young pigs (approximately 70-90% of cases), but adult pigs are also affected, starting from 2 years of age. The disease is dangerous because it is difficult to diagnose. In sick animals, the symptoms are not very pronounced, because the course of the disease is low-intensity, due to which it can be delayed to critical levels.
