A person who knows the basics of first aid is the link between the victim and the ambulance service. In this capacity, you must be able to recognize that an attack of illness or injury is an urgent situation, and then may need to provide first aid to the victim until emergency services arrive. The immediate arrival of emergency personnel increases the victim's chances of surviving a life-threatening emergency.
