Muscles of the Lower Limbs

The muscles of the lower extremities provide movement of the legs and support of the body during walking, running and other types of physical activity. They are divided into several groups:

Muscles of the hip region: the gluteal muscles envelop the pelvis - the three muscles that form the buttocks. They allow the body to stay straight and allow a person to move on two limbs.

Thigh muscles: the main ones are the quadriceps muscle, which straightens the leg, the biceps femoris muscle - the antagonist of the previous one, and the adductor muscles, which are shaped like a fan and allow you to flex and straighten the thigh.

Calf muscles: the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles should be distinguished, whose joint action ensures flexion and extension of the leg when walking. They are attached to the heel bone by the calcaneal tendon.

Foot muscles: Made up of small muscles that allow small movements of the toes and make walking easier.
