Taste-tear reflex

The lacrimal system reflex or receptor reflex from the Latin res (rhythm) serves to detect chemical stimuli that disrupt the natural composition of salivary secretions. It acts as a defense mechanism by responding to foreign particles in the mouth, esophagus and stomach. Sensitive receptors in the gustatory duct detect the appearance of food or gastric juice. In this case, a reflex reaction occurs, causing the pharynx and oral cavity to be cleared of the product. Thus, sucking prevents it from entering the gastrointestinal tract.
