Acetoacetic Acid

Acetoacetic acid (AAA) is an organic compound that is widely used in various fields of industry and science. It is an important intermediate in the synthesis of many organic compounds, such as acyloindigo, aminoacetone and others.

Acetoacetic acid can be prepared from acetone and acetic acid through a condensation reaction. This reaction occurs in the presence of a catalyst such as sulfuric acid or sulfur dioxide. The reaction produces acetoacetic ester, which is then hydrolyzed to acetoacetic acid.

Properties of acetoacetic acid

Acetoacetic acid is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor. It dissolves easily in water and organic solvents such as ethyl alcohol and acetone. Acetoacetic acid is highly reactive and can enter into various chemical reactions. For example, it is easily oxidized to acetic anhydride and carboxylic acids. Also, acetoacetic acid can be hydrolyzed to acetate and acetic acid.
