Hiccup: What should I do?

Hiccups are an unpleasant phenomenon familiar to many. This is the result of convulsive contractions of the diaphragm, causing characteristic sounds.

The causes of hiccups are varied: overeating, cold, stress, and some diseases. Usually, hiccups go away quickly on their own. But if it drags on, you can try the following methods:

  1. Drink a glass of water in small sips. This helps wash away food debris that irritates the nerves.

  2. Place your finger on the root of your tongue, simulating a gag reflex. This breaks the rhythm of the hiccups.

  3. Try something sour or bitter - lemon, vinegar. Unusual sensations help stop the spasms.

  4. To get scared - slam the bag, scream. Fright stops hiccups.

  5. Drink water in an inclined position so that it gets into an unusual place in the esophagus.

  6. Make a bet with money that the attack will not happen again in the next minute. It's a distraction.

If hiccups recur frequently or last for more than an hour, you should consult a doctor. Testing and treatment may be required. But in most cases, the proposed methods help cope with annoying hiccups.
