Kerat is an organic substance; colorless liquid, when dissolved in water it forms a surfactant. Kerat is obtained by saponification of natural or synthetic fats with alkali or alcohol. Washing out solid residues from the hydrolysis of vegetable oils with alkali is also called kerization of oil. An important process is the kerification of coconut oil, which results in the production of lauric acid (laurin). Kerat is used as a foaming agent, as an additive to cosmetics to improve the appearance of soap. Used for washing and treating hair. Kerite is used to produce vaseline oil from petroleum. Methyl and propyl kerate are produced synthetically. The most common is methyl cerate, which is used for the manufacture of soft varieties of toilet soap and in the production of transparent shampoos. Propyl kerate is a colorless, solid, fusible, easily digestible intermediate product that has foaming properties for food purposes: when added to a soap base, the quality of the foam improves.

The use of kerat (kerizite, keratin) in the treatment of skin diseases helps restore the structural elements of the stratum corneum and reduce its permeability, improve the barrier function of the epidermis and reduce transepidermal water loss, restore keratinization processes, which, accordingly, leads to a decrease in inflammation, peeling, and dry skin and increasing its resistance to adverse environmental factors. In water, the surface active effect of kerat is many times stronger than in organic solvents. It is a foaming agent when saponifying solid vegetable and animal fats with alkalis and is a better foaming agent than processed products of high fractions of oil. When saponifying fats from aqueous soap bases, keratin serves as a foaming additive, as well as a foaming agent for the production of shampoo, liquid soap, solid toothpastes, emulsions, creams, pastes, ointments and other cosmetic and hygiene products. The released product (diacetate) can be used as a plasticizer for household plastics and acetate films. Aqueous solutions of kerat are used to dissolve resins, rubbers and other organic compounds.
