Tibetan body and face massage: how to do and what you need to know

Tibetan massage is one of the oldest types of massage on our planet. This is a special direction that is used in Tibetan medicine. It is dedicated exclusively to our body. It is one of the six external therapies mentioned in the classic treatise on Tibetan medicine. In the West, this treatise is called the “Four Tantras”.

The massage therapy is called kunyi, which means “rubbing with oils” in Tibetan.

This massage therapy is intended for many diseases associated with our body, in particular “wind” diseases. This involves rubbing specific acupressure points, in some cases using herbal pastes and ointments. The method of application and points are the same as in shiatsu massage (Japanese therapy). This therapy is a traditionally important procedure using herbal oil, along with the main treatment of the disease.

Massage Oil

Often, three types of oils are used:

  1. Purified ghee – it is used for “windy” diseases, tension and stress. It is believed that the more mature the oil, the more useful it is to use.
  2. Vegetable oil – sesame vegetable oil is considered one of the best. This massage oil is moderately warm and sweet. Under its influence, the skin takes on a silky appearance and the body is strengthened. Stress also disappears.
  3. Animal fat (lard) – this oil is used to treat specific diseases. Depending on the type of disease, a specific type of animal fat is used.

In some specific situations, various customized medicated oils and lotions are used. For example, a cream is created from mixtures of melted butter, nutmeg and certain types of flour, which is rubbed into acupressure points. Medicinal ghee is used to relieve headaches, dizziness, insomnia and rapid heartbeat. Medicinal ghee is created from various ingredients, where each ingredient has its own meaning and effect on the body.

As a rule, therapeutic massage involves 15 main points located on an open area of the body. Stimulation of these points, as well as others, is used to stop bleeding, headaches, dizziness, relieve stress, lumbar pain, and also for menstrual irregularities.
