Acrophobia

Acrophobia is the fear of heights. This is one of the most common specific phobias.

People with acrophobia experience intense fear and discomfort when they are at heights, such as on the balcony of a tall building, on the observation deck of a skyscraper, or while flying in an airplane. At the same time, they understand the irrationality of their fears, but cannot control them.

Symptoms of acrophobia include panic, rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, and difficulty breathing. People with acrophobia may be reluctant to climb to heights, even when necessary. Some people try to avoid situations involving heights altogether.

The causes of acrophobia may lie in psychological trauma associated with heights, such as a fall in childhood. Genetic predisposition may also influence the development of a phobia.

To overcome acrophobia, psychotherapy is used, in particular, methods of cognitive behavioral therapy. They help you gradually get used to heights and learn to control your fear.
