The Sports Encyclopedia of Russia gives the following definition of athleticism: “Athleticism is a system of physical exercises aimed at improving health, harmonious development of strength abilities and improving a person’s physique.”

Athleticism is represented in two directions: recreational and sports.

The health-improving direction is characterized as a physical education activity aimed at normalizing physical development and increasing the level of physical fitness, in particular, developing strength qualities and abilities, as well as achieving harmonious, proportional muscle development and aesthetic correction of the physique of those involved. Athletic gymnastics belongs to the health-improving direction.

In fact, athletic gymnastics is a systematic set of strength-oriented physical exercises using various movement weights.

Strength sports are a group of acyclic sports in which competitive activity is associated with the manifestation of the extreme strength abilities of athletes, the formation of a proportional figure with a pronounced development of its muscles.

Weightlifting is an Olympic strength sport directly related to lifting the barbell in its two key competitive exercises:

  1. I) jerk,
  2. II) push.

Weight-lifting – another strength sport directly related to lifting weights in two key competitive exercises:

  1. I) push of two weights from the chest,
  2. II) jerking the weight with the left and then with the right hands alternately the maximum number of times within 10 minutes,

Or: in one movement - a push in a long cycle: this is nothing more than a push of 2 weights from the chest with further lowering them to a hanging position.

Powerlifting (powerlifting) (from the English words power-strength, power; lifting- lifting) is a strength sport focused on lifting the barbell in three key competitive exercises:

  1. I) squatting,
  2. II) bench press on a flat bench,
  3. III) traction.

Benchpress (from the English words bench - bench, press - pressure) - a power sport: bench press from a lying position on a flat, horizontal bench.

Body-building (bodybuilding) (from the English words body - body, build - build) - a strength sport aimed at developing and demonstrating proportional and prominent muscles.

Arm wrestling (armwrestling) (from the English words arm - hand, wrestling - fight) - power martial arts on the hands in a standing position at a special table.
