Losing weight will help get rid of insomnia and other sleep problems. This has been proven by the experience of several dozen Americans of different ages and genders. It does not matter how a person will get rid of excess weight.
By removing excess fat from the waist area, you can significantly improve the quality of your sleep. American scientists from Johns Hopkins University found this out.
77 people participated in the study. All of them were obese and had type II diabetes mellitus or a condition preceding this disease. People were divided into two groups; in the first group, participants adhered to a diet and regularly received physical activity, in the second group they only followed a diet. At the beginning and end of the experiment, all subjects filled out questionnaires about how they slept, including information about snoring, insomnia, restless sleep, and the use of sleeping pills.
During the study, people from both groups lost an average of 7 kg. Everyone lost approximately the same amount of fat tissue from the abdominal area, which was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging. Ultimately, the improvement in sleep quality was estimated to be 20% - regardless of whether participants exercised or just followed the recommended diet.
"We believe that the solution to sleep problems was weight loss, especially around the waist," said study author Carrie Stewart. She added that this occurred regardless of the age or gender of the subjects.
“Depending on the cause, sleep disturbances increase the risk of hypertension, heart attack and stroke,” concluded Carrie Stewart.
Scientists explain that obese patients often experience apnea – short-term pauses in breathing during sleep. This leads to insomnia, problems with the heart and blood vessels of the brain, which does not receive enough oxygen and nutrients.
