Internet addicts are similar to drunks and drug addicts

A scientific study conducted by experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences confirms this statement. The study analyzed magnetic resonance imaging data of the brain of 35 people aged 14 to 21 years. Scientists observed this group for more than a year to identify Internet addiction.

Of the 35 study participants, 17 admitted that they had problems with Internet addiction. As a result of comparing brain scans with those of healthy people, changes were found in the functioning of white matter in the prefrontal cortex of the brain of Internet addicts. These changes confirm disturbances in the nerve tissues that are responsible for decision making, emotions and self-control.

Signs of Internet addiction include all free time spent on the Internet, replacement of real communication with virtual communication, automatic access to the Internet, postponing necessary tasks and tasks for later, depression without access to the Internet and the need to constantly be on the Internet, even while away from home.

These signs are very similar to those seen in people suffering from alcohol or drug addiction. Internet addiction causes the same changes in the brain as addiction to harmful substances.

What can be done to avoid or cure Internet addiction? First, you need to learn how to manage your time online and set boundaries. For example, limit the time spent on social networks or games. Secondly, it’s worth learning how to replace virtual entertainment with real ones. Use your free time to walk, read books, play sports or socialize with friends and family.

Therefore, it is necessary to learn to control your time on the Internet and set boundaries to prevent the development of addiction.
